Complete Your Work With Honesty and Integrity
Where does this precept land for you?
When I introduce the precepts to students this tends to be one that sits easily.
Let's take some time to dig beneath the surface of these words and their intention.Â
To start let's define work. This of course can equate to the things you do to support yourself financially. It is also reflected in your family life, your personal life, your spiritual practice and all the ways you contribute to the collective. When I internalize this I hear this precept asking me - how are you showing up for your life, in every interaction, with each breath.
Are you living and giving from your heart?
You may read this and think "I'm honest when I go to work and I don't do anything I think isn't right." This could mean you show up on time, engage with people or your work, you don't steal, you don't lie... Overall a good way to show up. This is a little like patting yourself on the back as a good girl or boy.
What if we look at another layer of this.
Is your work in integrity with your life's purpose?
Is your heart lit up because you are offering to be of service in ways that honour your innate gifts?
If yes, amazing! If no, can you connect with aspects of your calling in your daily goings on?Â
Perhaps you work at a job that doesn't light you up. If there are other humans at this job you have opportunity to have meaningful interactions and hold space in a way that does light you up. Perhaps small acts of kindness, offering Reiki to clear the space you're in, taking a breath before moving from one task to the next.Â
Perhaps your work is supposed to be important and yet you know you have other things to offer. Are you able to find ways to engage with your community in the way you'd like to show up as your honest self? Volunteering, offering your gifts part time from your home or in a clinic?
Being in integrity with societal law is one thing, being in integrity with how you show up in community is another and perhaps of utmost importance is how you show up with honesty and integrity for yourself.
When you step into this precept beyond the surface of doing right in accordance with how society operates, are you truly completing your work with honesty and integrity?
I find this a great self reflection from time to time.
I hope you do too.
